The Cardinals V. 2008 - 9-16-08 Update Everything looked so good up to about 2 weeks ago, and then it all came crashing down. 2008 would not be a reclamation year. As it sits now, today, with the Cardinals having lost 6 straight, we will be lucky if the club finishes over 500. It is now time to start thinking about next year. With that said, here are my thoughts in no particular order:
I look for an indication of how the off-season goes starting during the General Managers meeting this winter. If the Cardinals even appear to be active, this could be a good sign. If not, we could be looking at another year. I do not entirely blame DeWitt on this. The Yankees and Red Sox of the world have made it difficult to obtain quality players for the long term. Jocketty, as much as I liked him as a GM, did not respect the young talent and used it as a bargaining chip for established players. That worked in the 90's but now if you do not have the big dollars you cannot compete and some of these sweepstakes. Many teams are having to give up really decent players just to get a top shelf player at the trade deadline and that is only for a 2 - 3 month run until the player is eligible for free agency (see C.C. Sabathia). The Cardinals are working on creating more home grown talent and I commend them for it. If that is the path they are going to go, though, be honest with the fans and say so. Do not jerk us around and say, we are going to get top shelf talent and come back with dirt cheap dregs. I welcome your comments and thoughts. Joe |
